This is a wonderful example of a Kenyan coffee. It is juicy and refreshing with notes of rose hip and grapefruits.

Nyeri is located on the slopes of Mount Kenya, and together with the neighbouring region Kirinyaga is known for its intense, complex, and flavour-dense coffees. Smallholder farmers delivering cherry to the factories owned by Mutheka FCS have an average of 250 coffee trees each. Coffee trees grow alongside maize, bananas and beans in clay loam soil 1600-1800 meters above sea level.

At Kamuyu factory, the cherries are brought to the factory after picking and then sorted before being pulped with a 3-disc pulper. The parchment is then fermented overnight to break down the sugars, before being washed and graded. After that, it is dried on the drying tables for 8-14 days. Farmers turn the coffee pulps into fertiliser in order to be as sustainable as possible.

The long-term goal of the Mutheka FCS is to increase coffee production through farmer training and input access, and Good Agricultural Practice seminars are conducted year-round. CMS's goal is to establish a transparent, trust based relationship with the smallholder farmer, helping to support a sustained industry growth in Kenya, whilst bringing premium quality coffee to the international market.
